Agro-Joint

A Jewish charitable organisation specially founded in 1924 by the American Committee for the distribution of funds for the aid of Jews suffering from the war ("Joint"), for the provision of financial and technical aid for the realisation of the Jewish agricultural settlement project in the USSR. Right up until 1938 Agro-Joint worked actively in the USSR, chiefly in Ukraine and the Crimea, supplying Jewish settlers with seed, agricultural equipment and building materials, as well as organising loans, professional-technical colleges and courses. In the 1920s the role of Agro-Joint in the process of Jewish resettlement was so great that branches of this organisation in the newly-founded agricultural colonies frequently took the place of organs of the Soviet state.
